Jack Boyd Smith Jr. plans to build more momentum in 2024

Winning the Collector of the Year Award at February’s Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, in Boca Raton, Florida, was one of many big moments in a breakout 2023 season for Elkhart, Indiana’s Jack Boyd Smith Jr., whose assemblage of rare and historic vehicles comprise The JBS Collection.

In 2023, the rising collection broke into The Classic Car Trust’s Top 100 worldwide collection rankings—listed in the annual publication, The Key—and won enough concours awards and distinctions to cover the luxurious backseat coachwork of its 1933 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron (a 2023 Best in Class winner at May’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy).

While some might see 2023 as a tough act to follow, the spirited collector is not vague regarding his high hopes. Smith Jr., in 2024, plans to take a grand assortment of The JBS Collection’s automobiles to as many as seven different concours events throughout the country, and overseas, and remains diligent in working to grow his collection and build momentum.

“I’m keeping my foot on the gas, and the pedal to the metal,” said Jack Boyd Smith Jr. “Anyone who knows me knows I have high expectations when I put my heart and soul into something, and this collection is a part of who I am. We’re going to hit the road pretty hard in 2024, and I’m excited for it. Being a collection owner, you always want to continuously achieve. The vehicles I work to find, preserve, and collect represent the pursuit of all-out excellence; and that’s also what inspires my work to share our vehicles with the world and earn them the recognition they deserve.”

January, in particular, is a time for planning and coordination as Smith Jr. works with longstanding partner, LaVine Restorations Inc.—of Nappanee, Indiana—to organize a concours schedule and decide which cars to show, and where.

“There’s a lot of hard work that goes into maintaining a collection and planning out the season,” said Smith Jr. “For me, aside from my family, The JBS Collection is some of my most important work, and it’s work that never really ends. In January, as we bring the season schedule clearer into view, things start to wind up pretty fast—and then once the season begins it becomes something of a whirlwind with all the traveling and show preparation.”

One concours event on The JBS Collection’s 2024 calendar, however, does not require a long journey, and—as event host—gives Smith Jr. the opportunity to show his automobiles purely for presentation.

Copshaholm a chance to breathe, bring it all back home

The sixth annual Concours d’Elegance at Copshaholm, July 13, takes place on the grounds of the historic Copshaholm Mansion in South Bend, Indiana, and is co-sponsored by The JBS Collection and LaVine Restorations—the restorer of the collection’s heralded 937 Cord 812 Phaeton Convertible that was once owned by Amelia Earhart. The Concours at Copshaholm is an official concours event, with a full slew of award presentations, but as host Smith Jr. shows his vehicles at Copshaholm purely out of appreciation for the community.

“People in Northern Indiana have a special relationship with the automobile, and the Concours at Copshaholm is my way of sharing my love of classic automobiles with them,” said Smith Jr. “Between 1905 and 1930 Elkhart was home to more than 20 carmakers—we have a 1928 Elcar Model 8-91 Roadster in our collection—and Studebaker in many ways shaped South Bend as a city for a long time. Folks in this region had grandparents and great-grandparents who worked to build cars like our Elcar and our 1923 Studebaker Big Six. Being able to help put on this event every year, and see the thrill it brings, is something we’re truly proud of. But don’t get me wrong—at our other 2024 events we’ll be looking to show well, and place well, and continue to raise eyebrows.”

The JBS Collection traveled all over the globe in 2023 and had the type of breakthrough year collectors dream of. Jack Boyd Smith Jr. hopes to build on that momentum in 2024, and looks forward to hosting the Concours d’Elegance at Copshaholm, July 13, in South Bend, Indiana.
